{"id":693,"date":"2012-11-25T14:11:45","date_gmt":"2012-11-25T19:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mayliang.us\/?p=693"},"modified":"2012-11-25T14:11:45","modified_gmt":"2012-11-25T19:11:45","slug":"movie-trifecta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mayliang.us\/?p=693","title":{"rendered":"Movie Trifecta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We don\u2019t usually manage to get to movies much, as they require we be at a specific place at a specific time for two plus hours, and that is usually too much for our schedule to accommodate.\u00a0 Even when we get to the movie theatre, we rarely see anything that is not PG-13 or below.\u00a0 However, yesterday was certainly a bonanza of movie riches.<\/p>\n<p>We took our teenage daughter to see the new James Bond movie, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Skyfall<\/span>.\u00a0 I am generally a big fan of James Bond movies, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Skyfall<\/span> was certainly the best Bond movie I\u2019ve seen in several years.\u00a0 Typically the formula is:\u00a0 unbelievable action scenes + cool gadgets + beautiful women in various states of undress = successful Bond movie.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Skyfall<\/span>, however, was a much deeper and more nuanced movie than the typical Bond movie.\u00a0 It delves into Bond\u2019s past and is a rich (if understated in a typical British way) exploration of the relationship between M and Bond.\u00a0 Javier Bardem is indescribably creepy as the villain.\u00a0 The action scenes were excellent, but there is surprisingly little sex (for a Bond movie).\u00a0 The movie also contains a nice commentary of old-fashioned action versus new-fangled technology.\u00a0 All in all, it is a more mature and cerebral Bond movie than most.\u00a0 And while Sean Connery remains my favorite James Bond, Daniel Craig is a worthy successor.\u00a0 It&#8217;s rated PG-13, which is a fair rating.<\/p>\n<p>The kids also saw <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Wreck-it Ralph<\/span>, although publicly, we have to say that our daughter didn\u2019t want to see it but agreed to babysit our son through the film.\u00a0 They both liked it well enough, although our son was much more enthusiastic about it.\u00a0 I suspect the movie\u2019s target audience is tweens and younger.\u00a0 Jim and I do want to see it ourselves, but it may have to wait until it comes out on DVD.\u00a0 The movie is rated PG.<\/p>\n<p>The final movie Jim and I saw was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Argo<\/span>.\u00a0 The movie is rated R (mostly for use of the \u201cF\u201d word, although, similar to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The King\u2019s Speech<\/span>, the language used is purposeful and not gratuitous).\u00a0 We plan to take our daughter to see it despite the rating.\u00a0 It is an excellent movie.\u00a0 Even though you know how the movie will end, the tension and suspense is overwhelming.\u00a0 The scenes when they are trying to leave Iran are extremely intense and well-done.\u00a0 There is some violence (e.g. a man getting shot;
